Surprisingly Good Oatmeal Recipe

In my process to get away from processed food I decided to make Old Fashioned Oatmeal. Have you ever really read the package of the instant oatmeal? Check out the amount of sodium in the instant oatmeal. My goal was to make enough oatmeal ahead of time to have it for breakfast two days a week. The result was quite surprising. Then I realized that adding the salt and sugar into the boiling water/milk mixture provides more flavor with less ingredients. The texture was also better than the sometimes pasty instant oatmeal.

Recipe:
1/2 cup oats
1/2 cup water
1/2 cup skim milk
2 tsp BROWNULATED brown sugar
Dash of salt
Cinnamon (optional)
1/2 oz chopped walnuts
|
Bring water, milk, salt, cinnamon and brown sugar to a boil. Add oats and cook for 20 minutes. Garnish with walnuts. For a time saver, double all ingredients and refrigerate half. Can be refrigerator for up to 4 days.

Waiting for the New Weight Loss Pills |

First of all, 2/3 of Americans are obese or overweight. When I first started my nutrition career about 10 years ago I remember giving a lecture that 1/3 of Americans were overweight or obese. Despite all the diet trends and previous diet pills, the statistics reveal an alarming epidemic in the United States. Part of Diet by Andrea is to find out why we have these dangerous trends, despite an abundance of nutrition information.

Is Salvation on the Way?

From a report on the Today Show, March 26, 2009, 3 new diet pills are in the final stages of human testing. One participant, Ed Sussman, who has lost 50 pounds, feels “he is a responder”. According to the study, Ed Sussman needed to keep a food journal and walk more. Wait a minute. He is a responder to what? He still does not know if he is in the placebo group or the weight loss pill group. I am curious myself, to see if this was from the pills or Ed just becoming conscious of what he was eating and walked a little more.

Is it the pills or the placebo effect?

These pills which are being studied are combinations of 3 drugs that were already on the market: Wellbutrin-an antidepressant, Topamax-for seizures but shown to help curb appetite, and Fen-Phen. Remember Fen-Phen? Fen-Phen was withdrawn from the market by the Food and Drug Administration after reports of valvular heart disease and pulmonary hypertension.

One of the goals of these new pills is to stave off risky laparoscopic band surgery. Lap band surgery is also designed to help decrease further diseases of diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol. So, let’s look at how we have progressed in this country:

Previous

Lap band → ↑ weight loss → ↓ risk of obesity related diseases and morbidity

Now

New weight loss pills → ↓ Lap band surgery → ↑ weight loss → ↓ risk of obesity related diseases and morbidity

Do you see where there is concern? We keep adding on quick fixes without getting to the root of the problem.

I am not saying I am opposed to any of these treatments, especially when the risk of obesity related diseases may outweigh the risk of surgery. I am concerned that they are not lasting effects, if you do not learn to make your eating habits work for you. No one treatment can work for everyone. It maybe helpful to combine surgical and drug weight loss efforts with a formula like this:

Ongoing nutrition support ↔ ↑ accountability ↔ New weight loss pills → ↓ Lap band surgery → ↑ weight loss → ↓ risk of obesity related diseases and morbidity

If you do not have a formula that you can stick to in the long-term, then most likely your weight loss will not be lasting. In addition, if approved these pills may not be available until later this year. Instead of waiting for the weight loss pills, why not start working with a dietitian now? You may find out you were better off in the placebo group after all.
